Nathan grew up in a small town in Southwest Washington and spent much of his youth hiking and camping across the Pacific Northwest. Having the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens occur in his figurative backyard was a formative experience, which focused his interests into landscape processes and environmental history.  In 2009, he received a MS in Environmental Science and Regional Planning from the Vancouver Branch Campus of Washington State University, and he now serves as an ethno-ecologist in the Natural and Cultural Resources Departments of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe. Nathan still escapes to the outdoors, and can occasionally be spotted driving his 1971 Volkswagen bus, nicknamed “the Albatross”, down forest backroads.
